This is one of the first questions almost every shop owner asks us, and it's a fair one. Both platforms can send you paying customers. Neither is "better" in general. They just do two very different jobs, and picking the wrong one first is how a lot of ad budgets quietly disappear.
Here's the difference, in plain terms, and how to decide where to start.
The core difference: intent vs. awareness
Google Ads shows up when someone is already looking. Someone's check engine light comes on, they type "brake repair near me," and your ad appears right there in the results. They didn't need to be convinced a repair shop exists. They needed to be shown one, fast.
Facebook and Instagram ads show up when someone isn't looking yet. Nobody scrolling Instagram on a Tuesday night is thinking about their transmission, they're thinking about dinner, or a dog video, or why their cousin is on vacation again. These ads work by putting your shop in front of the right local people before they need you, so when the moment does come, you're already familiar.
Neither is doing anything wrong by not being the other. A hammer isn't a bad screwdriver. They're built for different jobs, and no amount of arguing with your toolbox is going to change that.
Google Ads: best for "I need this now"
Google Ads is where you'll usually see the fastest, most directly trackable results, because you're reaching people at the exact moment of need.
Good for:
- Emergency and urgent repairs (check engine lights, brakes, overheating)
- High-intent searches like "transmission repair near me"
- Shops that want appointments booked this week, not just brand awareness
Worth knowing:
- Cost per click tends to be higher than Facebook, since you're paying for someone who's already close to booking
- It rewards being specific. A campaign built around one service with its own page usually beats one broad "we do everything" campaign
Facebook and Instagram Ads: best for "I'll need this eventually"
Facebook ads work more like a well-placed flyer than a phone book listing. You're not catching someone at the moment of need, you're staying visible until that moment arrives.
Good for:
- Maintenance reminders (oil changes, seasonal check-ups, tire changes)
- Building local name recognition in a specific neighborhood or town
- Retargeting people who visited your website but didn't call or book
Worth knowing:
- Cost per click is usually lower, but the person clicking is further from being ready to book
- Photos and video of your actual shop and team tend to outperform generic stock imagery by a wide margin. People are choosing who to trust, not just what to click, and nobody trusts a mechanic who exists only as a stock photo
A side-by-side look
| Google Ads | Facebook / Instagram Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Urgent, ready-to-book searches | Staying visible before the need hits |
| Typical cost per click | Higher | Lower |
| Speed to results | Fast, often same week | Slower, builds over time |
| What it needs to work | A clear, specific service page | Real photos, a real offer |
So which one should you start with?
If you can only run one campaign right now, start with Google Ads for your one or two highest-margin services. It's the closest thing to a direct line between ad spend and a booked appointment, which makes it easier to prove out before committing more budget elsewhere.
Once that's running and you can see a clear cost per booked appointment, add Facebook and Instagram ads for maintenance offers and to stay in front of past visitors. Most of the shops we work with end up running both, not because more is always better, but because they're solving two different problems: getting today's urgent repair, and staying top of mind for next month's oil change.
The mistake to avoid
The biggest waste we see is a shop running one platform with the strategy meant for the other, like using Facebook ads for "brake repair near me" style urgency (nobody's scrolling for that between dog videos), or using Google Ads for a soft maintenance reminder nobody was actively searching for. Match the platform to the moment, and both start pulling their weight.
